Viktor Gyökeres Set for First Arsenal Start in Pre-Season Clash Against Villarreal

By Sport Ledger  | August 6, 2025

Viktor Gyökeres is set to make his first start for Arsenal in today’s pre-season friendly against Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Swedish striker, who joined the Gunners from Sporting CP for a reported fee of £63.5 million, made his unofficial debut with a short cameo during Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong.

Gyökeres' arrival has ignited a wave of excitement among the Arsenal faithful. His iconic number 14 shirt has already broken club merchandise sales records, even briefly crashing the official Arsenal website due to overwhelming demand.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is optimistic that the 26-year-old can deliver the consistent goal-scoring threat that has eluded the North London side in recent seasons.

> “We believe Viktor can be a decisive player for us,” Arteta said earlier this week. “He has the profile, the hunger, and the mentality we need at the top of the pitch.”

Today’s match represents more than just a friendly. It's a key opportunity for Gyökeres to build on-field chemistry with his new teammates ahead of a high-stakes Premier League opener against Manchester United on August 17.

Fans can catch the game live via Arsenal’s official website and app, as the Gunners look to build momentum heading into the 2025/26 campaign.

With expectations sky-high, all eyes will be on Gyökeres as he leads the line in his Emirates Stadium debut. Arsenal supporters will be hoping it’s the first of many memorable performances.
